I am amazed to see such inaccuracy, does this happen only for audio ripping? I imagine it would be quite a mess if this happened to other data and programs. So ripping them accurately to a hard drive actually allows more accurate playback than from the CDs? When ripping the ripper can try many times to make sure the result is without error, so in a way, yes.
What I mean is reading from the atapi dvd rw dh16w1s drive more reliable during playback?
If you have a disk with no errors, then reading from cd or reading from the hardrive are the same. If you have a disk with errors, its possible to extract a good rip by re-reading the problematic areas and save the good atapi dvd rw dh16w1s to the hardrive.

I'm trying to install gentoo on a second hand server I purchased, but once it boots into the live cd, I can't find my disks. It has 4 hot pluggable 70GB SCSI discs, I'm not sure if it has hardware raid as it wasn't advertised as having it.
I'm not sure where to start here as my disks have always been found automatically. I tried to run fdisk on the 'sg' devices but fdisk hangs.
It appears to me to be finding the disks, but it does not create device(s) for them.
